Why Big Emotions Don’t Mean Your Nervous System Is Broken

What if nervous system regulation isn’t about calming down?

We hear about “regulating your nervous system” everywhere in healing and wellness spaces, but somewhere along the way, regulation started to become synonymous with being calm, quiet, agreeable, and completely unbothered by whatever life throws at you.

That’s not how a healthy nervous system works.

Your body is supposed to react. Grief can be intense. Anger can be loud. Excitement can make you want to jump out of your skin. Fear can flood your body with adrenaline when you’re actually in danger. Activation isn’t automatically dysregulation — and other people’s discomfort with your emotions isn’t proof that something is wrong with you.

In this episode of Jotindi: Journey to the Inner Divine, host Mariah Aurora breaks down what nervous system regulation actually means, why you might benefit from it even if you don’t think you have a “nervous system problem,” and why the goal isn’t to become some permanently serene version of yourself who never gets angry, overwhelmed, excited, or loud.

We’re also going somewhere we haven’t really gone on Jotindi before: the patriarchy.

Because if our picture of a “healed” or “regulated” woman is someone who never raises her voice, never gets too angry, never reacts strongly, never takes up too much space, and never makes anyone uncomfortable…we might want to ask whether we’re actually describing nervous system health or just a woman who’s easier to control.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • What nervous system regulation actually means — and why regulation is about flexibility, not constant calm

  • Why activation isn’t automatically a sign that something is wrong

  • How to start recognizing the difference between a big emotional response and a spiral

  • Why other people’s comfort is NOT the measure of your regulation

  • How some healing and spiritual spaces may accidentally confuse emotional conformity with nervous system health

  • Physical and emotional experiences that can sometimes occur alongside chronic stress

  • Why different nervous system states may need completely different tools

  • What to do when the popular grounding techniques just don’t work for you

  • Why regulation is a relationship with your nervous system, not a technique you memorize

  • And why the absolute WORST time to start learning how your nervous system works is when you’re already at a 10

Because the goal of this work isn’t to get to a place where nothing affects you.

It’s to know yourself well enough to recognize what’s happening inside of you, have ways of supporting yourself through it, and trust that you can move through your emotions without abandoning yourself.

Your body isn’t a problem you’re trying to silence. Nervous system work is learning its language well enough to know when to listen, when to reassure it, when to give it what it’s asking for — and when to just let it be loud.
